IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is generally required for businesses involved in importing or exporting goods from India.
Any eligible business or individual intending to import or export goods from India can apply for an IEC through the DGFT portal, subject to applicable exemptions.
An IEC has permanent validity unless it is suspended, cancelled, surrendered, or deactivated under applicable rules.
IEC is generally issued immediately after successful submission of the application, subject to successful validation and verification of the required details.
The government application fee for obtaining a new IEC is ₹500. Professional service charges, if applicable, are separate.
Yes. IEC details can be modified through the DGFT portal when business information changes. An IEC can also be surrendered online if the holder no longer wishes to operate it.
